Europolitan intensifies UMTS activities Bo Johannisson, former Strategy and Business Development Manager for Telenordia, has been employed by Europolitan to lead third generation mobile telephony - UMTS - activities. The abbreviation stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System and is a new standard that supports data transfer at very high speeds. Bo Johannisson was most recently with Telenordia. Five years ago British Telecom made him Project Manager and gave him the task of starting up the company. Since then Bo Johannisson has been the Strategy and Business Development Manager. Prior to that he worked for Telia/Unisource where he managed a number of networking assignments in Europe. He also worked at the former Telub (now Enator) on telecommunications projects for the Swedish National Defence. Europolitan has employed Bo Johannisson as a Project Manager for the continuing work with UMTS, work that has been long underway at Europolitan. "This is really exciting and interesting. The telecom industry will focus on two things in the future: mobility and the Internet. This is exactly what this is about," says Bo Johannisson, who is looking forward to his new assignment. "I have always worked with cutting edge technology and I think it is very inspiring to work with new opportunities; to develop a business plan and then introduce the new technology and services to the market." UMTS will mean data transfer speeds up to 2 megabytes per second, compared to 43.2 kilobytes per second for GSM (with High Speed Circuit Switch Data, HSCSD). This will make it possible to use Internet services with multimedia characteristics through a mobile telephone. "Technically UMTS has fantastic possibilities. But it is a new technology and it is important that we carefully investigate the business opportunities," says Mikael Kluge, Marketing Director at Europolitan AB. Europolitan AB is a Swedish GSM operator that prioritizes service and quality. The company, which has its head office in Karlskrona, is a leading developer of technically advanced services for GSM 900/1800. The Europolitan Group also includes Europolitan Stores AB and the parent company, Europolitan Holdings, which is listed on the stock exchange. The Group employs around 800 people.
