Europolitan launches open WAP-portal

1 December 1999 Europolitan launches open WAP-portal Europolitan is launching a WAP-portal that provides access to a wealth of information services such as News, Sport, Finance and Entertainment. It also allows Europolitan customers to send faxes and e-mails directly via their WAP-telephone. In addition, the WAP-portal will enable Europolitan's customers to access all WAP- information available on the Internet. "We have chosen an open portal so that our customers can access the network directly by entering their own URL addresses, thus gaining access to all WAP- pages," says Magnus Hoffner, Head of Internet Product Development. "This also means that services other than those we offer on our home page are made available to them." WAP-technology provides entirely new opportunities of offering customers information services adapted for mobile users. The services currently included in the portal are just a beginning; in time, customers will be able to use the Internet to do their banking, order tickets, search through telephone catalogues or find other information on-line. "We want to remain open to the WAP-services demanded by our customers," says Magnus Hoffner. "That is why we have chosen initially only to include a basic range of services that can then be supplemented in accordance with the customers' wishes. We have also been careful to ensure that the content providers with whom we work can meet our quality requirements." Europolitan's WAP-portal is accessible both from WAP-telephones and from Hantera, the web site used to manage Europolitan's services and subscriptions (hantera.europolitan.se). From Hantera customers can choose which services they wish to have access to via their WAP-telephones - making it easier for them to manage the information in the telephone. To use Europolitan's WAP- services from your telephone, you simply log in the same way as for Hantera, i.e. by using your telephone number and password. This will take you to the menus in Europolitan's portal. "Our work on the WAP-portal is part of our effort to offer our customers full mobility," says Mikael Kluge, Vice President Marketing at Europolitan. "WAP is one of the future ways of gaining access to Internet services. Europolitan is spearheading developments in the field of the convergence of mobile telephony and datacoms."
