Excosoft takes WebDAV into the Workplace
Excosoft takes WebDAV into the Workplace Excosoft Web-based Content Management System Leverages the Benefits of WebDAV to Give Customers a Scalable and Fast Solution for Unifying Their Business. Kista, Sweden - July 06, 2000 - Excosoft AB, a leading provider of content management solutions, today announced that it is now able to give its customers complete content management solutions based on WebDAV, a new protocol that enables writing, editing and sharing information across intranets, extranets and the Internet. All Excosoft products support WebDAV services, putting Excosoft firmly in the first-wave of technology vendors shipping WebDAV-compliant products. Momentum is gathering behind the new Web standard with Microsoft, for example, offering support for WebDAV in Office 2000, Internet Explorer, and Exchange 2000. There is also a WebDAV module for Apache, the world's most common Web server. It seems certain that WebDAV is going to be at the heart of future Web-based content management systems. "We believe that the widespread adoption of WebDAV will amount to a revolution in the workplace," said Anders Larsson, vice president of business development for Excosoft. "Up to now, the Web has failed to move beyond a read-only medium. WebDAV changes that as it enables you to write and edit Web-based content directly via a URL." One Excosoft customer, a business unit of the global communications supplier Ericsson, had a problem sharing information across a number of its geographically distant sites. They were unhappy with their two existing solutions: an X-terminal solution that was slow and demanded too much bandwidth, and a solution requiring information to be replicated between sites. As they already used Excosoft's software, they looked to Excosoft for a better solution. Excosoft put in place a scalable solution based on WebDAV that has saved time and reduced costs for the Ericsson business unit. The solution resolved the bandwidth problem making it possible to work even via an ordinary modem. Product information no longer needs to be replicated between sites as repositories can now be accessed from any location. The company intranet can now link to all information in the WebDAV-enabled repositories providing a single point of access. "We definitely see ourselves as leading the market in delivering next- generation content management solutions," said Jörgen Friman, president and CEO of Excosoft. WebDAV in brief WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), letting you read, write, update, lock, and save documents over the Web as simply as if they were on a local file system. WebDAV also provides a standard infrastructure for collaborative authoring. Using a WebDAV client, people can work together on a word-processing document, an XML document, or an image file - regardless of the software program or Internet service they are using. The protocol was proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and Microsoft, Netscape, Xerox, IBM, and Novell, as well as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have assisted its development.
