(June 15, 2006) — Exel plc. , a Finnish manufacturer and developer of composite consumer products including, cross country ski, alpine ski, Nordic Walking and trekking poles today announced it has won an International Stevie® Award for “Best Product Development Organization” in the 2006 International Business Awards (IBAs). The International Business Awards are the only global, all-encompassing business awards program honoring great performances in the workplace. Recipients of 82 International Stevie Award trophies were selected from more than 700 nominations received from companies and individuals in more than 30 countries. Twenty-two nations have at least one International Stevie winner each. This prestigious award came from the launch of Nordic Walking. Nordic Walking uses specifically designed poles to engage the upper body during fitness walking. The activity can help users burn up to 46 percent more calories than walking without poles. Exel was the first company in the world to launch Nordic Walking internationally. The sport now is one of the fastest growing fitness sports. An estimated 6 million people participates in Nordic Walking actively. Mr. Aki Karihtala, Senior Vice President of Exel plc’s Sport Division, says that he decided to enroll in the contest with Exel’s Nordic Walking concept. “Exel has been able to introduce its Nordic Walking concept already in over 30 countries commercially and it was time to check if this work would be recognized also by the Stevie® Awards. Karihtala, who has conducted the expansion of Nordic Walking from the very beginning, regards this international prize as a significant recognition for innovative marketing and development work of Nordic Walking, which Exel has been carrying out already for 10 years to promote and commercialize the sport. “It can be said that Nordic Walking has become a true export product for Exel and an image product for Finland. This country is more than just mobile phones and paper industry”, Karihtala comments. “Being the worldwide market leader in this category, we continue to reach our original goal of offering new business opportunities to the entire sporting goods industry. With this international award and our recent partnerships also in North America, we look forward to continued achievements and building more recognition for Nordic Walking.” Most recently, a subsidiary of Exel plc., Exel Sports NA has signed partnership deals with companies like Reebok to help generate awareness for Nordic Walking as well as offering an extensive network of trainers and events to expose consumers to the sport.
