Offers insight on what patient centricity means for pharmaceutical industry

New York, NY- Jon Fairest, Sanofi Canada President and CEO, offers insight to eyeforpharma on the key reasons why pharma needs to adhere to patient centricity.

With 20 years in the pharma industry and 12 working within the Sanofi group, Jon Fairest is an expert in his field. He reveals how companies can be more successful and ought to revolve around putting the patient first.

Jon begins the interview with eyeforpharma by saying, “The first  thing that we should establish, is that  companies like Sanofi have deliberately moved from being a traditional pharmaceutical company to a health care solutions company, and we have diversified our model to make sure that we’ve become much more patient centric.”

Throughout the interview Jon brings up both Diabetes and Oncology as being two pillars where patient needs come first. Staying caring and sensitive to both he tells us, “In terms of our oncology programs we now not only have options in terms of molecules that we can treat patients with, but we’ve put into place patient support programs where we can navigate a patient through how they manage their disease, and, equally important, how do we help the caregiver manage the disease? Because that’s something that I think society misses and is also very difficult.”

Jon adds, “It is important that the payer organizations, whether they are public or private, can also make the best of their resources. Therefore, we have to put into place programs that ensure there is real value added in everything that we do and that the outcomes are measured to get the best for society and get the best for patients.

In response to our question, “What do you think pharma needs to do in order to take patient centricity beyond a marketing phrase?” Jon says, “People talk about putting the patient at the center of everything people do, it doesn’t work like that. The industry needs to sit around the table together and have a transparent, open dialogue… an honest dialogue, focusing on common goals to add better patient care, better outcomes for patients, and better healthcare innovation in Canada.”

With regards to industry executives & payer organizations he further claims, “Now, what we need to do is ensure that both of these groups increase the dialogue and increase the understanding. Our goal should be to work together by focusing on our common objectives to add more value to the system and to the patient. I think the health care system itself has got to start focusing on what are the outcomes and what is value to patients. Otherwise innovation will never flourish and we will never improve patient care.”

Sanofi Canada has developed online interactive programs to help patients manage their own diseases. Such programs add value because they offer disease prevention strategies for patients and are crucially important on reducing the healthcare cost burden for companies and society.

Jon will be discussing Sanofi’s success and new advances at the 2ndannual eyeforpharma Patient Centricity Summit in Toronto, Canada. Numerous industry executives will join Jon Fairest to present case studies, provide insight, and network in pharma.
