NEW YORK, NY, July 25, 2011 – The Friars Club and the Friars Comedy Film Festival has presented acclaimed actors Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson with the “Best New Buddy Comedy Duo Award” for their comedic performances in Sony Pictures Classics upcoming film, THE GUARD. Written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, THE GUARD will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 29, 2011 and nationally throughout August. The presentation took place at the Friars Club in New York City.
Cheadle and Gleeson were also presented with a lifetime membership to the Friars Club.
THE GUARD is a comedic, fish out of water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption, and the two cops who must join forces to take on an international drug-smuggling gang, an unorthodox Irish policeman and a straitlaced FBI agent.
Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, who is the Abbot of The Friars Club, sent in the following message, which was presented by Head of the Friars Club, Freddie Roman:
“I know a thing or two about buddy movies... only one can be the pretty one, only one can be the smart one, and only one can get the girl. But when it's done right, both get to be the funny one, which is why Don and Brendan have emerged as the Best New Comedy Duo... and well deserved. Congratulations from one half of a great buddy team to the new buddy team!”
