Information and Support Day for Families of Disabled Children in Leeds

Report this content

Families raising a disabled or seriously ill child will have the opportunity to find out more about what services and support are available in the Leeds area on Thursday 28 April at Leeds Mencap, The Vinery Centre, Vinery Terrace, Leeds LS9 9LU.

The event is hosted by Family Fund, the UK’s largest charity helping families raising disabled children, with other organisations offering information, advice and support include Scope, Barnardos, Tuberous Sclerosis, Newlife, Shine, Kids and more.

Families are invited to come along between 10am and 2.30pm with refreshments available.  They can learn more about all the organisations and their support.

Family Fund is pleased to launch free digital skills workshops at this event where families can learn more about using their iPad.  A free soft play area will also be available for parents bringing their children along.

Anna was helped with an iPad for son, Malyn.  This changed the whole family’s daily lives, but also brought challenges with connection issues and limited knowledge of apps.  Anna and her husband received training through Family Fund’s digital skills programme, she said:

“We found the training session extremely useful Ray spent the whole morning talking through mine and Malyn’s specific needs and how the iPad could be useful to us as a whole family. He’s now fully engaged with the iPad and it’s definitely benefitted all the family. My husband and I are both more confident in using the iPad as a result of the training but we only get to use it when Malyn has gone to bed!”

Information and support days are a new initiative launched by Family Fund to bring relevant services to these families in one place.  These have taken place across the UK throughout last year and more planned for the coming year.
