Greater focus on professional photographers and on attracting international participation

Osnabrück, 19 December 2014

In the run-up to the second Felix Schoeller Photo Award, the Felix Schoeller Group has reviewed its Competition Rules and made a number of modifications. Primarily, the changes are about drawing a clearer line between professional and amateur photography and about putting the competition on a more international footing.

The 2015 Felix Schoeller Photo Award kicks off on 1 January with tighter Competition Rules. As Dr Friederike Texter, Head of Corporate Communications, explains, the aim is for the award and its five categories to target professional photographers even more closely. A special category will again be created and an award will once more be given to emerging professional photographers, i.e. student or trainee photographers and photographic assistants. The Competition Rules have also been revised with a view to giving the competition a more international character. Entries for the first competition in 2013 came from 26 countries. The aim for 2015 is to achieve even higher quality entries from all five continents. The new collaboration with Germany’s two largest photographers' associations DGPh and BFF will no doubt be helpful in achieving this, because both maintain close contacts with their international partner organisations. To reduce any language barriers that might exist, the Competition Rules will now be available in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

The jury will use high-quality DIN A3 print-outs to judge the entries

Entrants to the competition can still upload their work to the website using the convenient upload tool. In the first stage, the jury will review all the entries in digital form and draw up a shortlist, from which they then choose the nominations and winners. High-quality DIN A3 (297 x 420 mm) print-outs of the entries are made for when the jury meets. So anyone wishing to make a good impression at the jury session will be well advised to optimise their entry to this print size.

The 2015 Felix Schoeller Photo Award kicks off on 1 January

From 1 January to 31 May, entrants will have time to get their work together for the 2015 Felix Schoeller Photo Award and upload it to the website. The themed categories remain the same: portrait, landscape/nature, architecture/industry, photojournalism/editorial photography, and free choice/conceptual photography. The overall winner will be chosen from the category winners. Prize money of €2,000 will be awarded in each category and the overall winner can look forward to another €10,000.

The winner of the Emerging Photographer Award will receive non-monetary prizes worth €5,000 donated by professional photography retailers. With prize money totalling €25,000 the Felix Schoeller Photo Award is one of the richest photography prizes in the German-speaking world.
