On the morning of Monday 24 August, the jury consisting of renowned members of the photography world - Michael Dannenmann (portrait photographer), Ellen Dietrich (head of photography at Die Zeit weekly newspaper), Thomas Gerwers (co-publisher and editor-in-chief of ProfiFoto magazine), Gérard A. Goodrow (lecturer at CIAM) and Norbert Waning (curator and member of countless prestigious juries) - met in Düsseldorf. They faced an absolute judging marathon. The 143 entries that had already been shortlisted were spread out on tables in front of them – all of them printed in high-quality A3 format and sorted into the five categories, plus the Emerging Photographer Award. The task in hand now was to select the nominations from this carefully produced shortlist. The jury studied the entries together and discussed them. Whereas for the shortlist each of the five experts had made their own individual decisions, the jury now had to reach a joint decision about the 30 nominations in the portrait, landscape/nature, architecture/industry, photojournalism/editorial photography, and free choice/conceptual photography categories, plus the best work by an emerging photographer.

The jury members were unanimous in their opinion that the quality of the work submitted was extremely high. They welcomed the large number of international entries, seeing it as something very positive for the competition. The 30 nominations include work by 17 international participants. The aim to increase the international renown of the Felix Schoeller Photo Award has therefore clearly been achieved. Michael Dannenmann noted: “The Felix Schoeller Photo Award has gone up yet another notch. The international entries from 65 countries show very clearly that the world photography community is moving closer together – including in its view of photography.”

There has also been a marked rise in the number of entries submitted by emerging photographers. Emerging professional photographers submitted over 200 series of photographs and concepts in a bid to win the Felix Schoeller Emerging Photographer Award 2015, which has been donated by Phase One.

Osnabrück’s Cultural History Museum will host the prize ceremony on Sunday, 27 September 2015. The large-format photos by the 30 nominated professional photographers will then be on display in Osnabrück until 17 January 2016. “We are really looking forward to the exhibition, which will illustrate where international contemporary photography is right now. Anyone wanting to form an opinion on the subject of photography today should visit this exhibition in Osnabrück. You will be hard put to find a broader spectrum of work anywhere in Germany,” says Dr Friederike Texter, Senior Vice President Corporate Communication with the Felix Schoeller Group.
