FENNOVOIMA SUBMITS EIA PROGRAM TO MINISTRY

Fennovoima Oy has submitted an environmental impact assessment program (EIA program) to the Ministry of Employment and the Economy regarding a new nuclear power plant to be built in Finland.

On the basis of the EIA program and the related opinions and statements, Fennovoima will, during the remainder of the year, create the actual report on the project’s environmental impacts, i.e. the EIA report. In the EIA report, the project’s impact on air quality, water systems, soil, vegetation, animals, landscape and the developed surroundings will be assessed.

The possible locations for the nuclear power plant are Norrskogen and Kilgrundet in Kristinestad, Hanhikivi in Pyhäjoki, Kampuslandet and Gäddbergsö in Ruotsinpyhtää and Karsikko and Laitakari in Simo. A nuclear power plant with electric power of 1,500-2,500 MW will be reviewed in the EIA process by Fennovoima. The power plant may consist of up to two units and include a disposal site for low- and medium-level waste.

The Ministry of Employment and the Economy together with Fennovoima will organize information and discussion events open for the public in all of the alternative municipalities in February 2008. The Ministry will compile all statements and opinions given regarding the project.

Fennovoima is to establish local offices in all four municipalities and actively notify households in the areas of the project and the EIA procedure.

The EIA report is to be completed in the autumn of 2008, when the Ministry and Fennovoima will organize events for the public in all four municipalities. Fennovoima will also distribute information about the assessment results to households.

The EIA procedure is to be completed in the first quarter of 2009, after which Fennovoima will file a decision-in-principle application concerning the construction of the nuclear power plant to the Finnish Government.
