FNO’s The Flying Dutchman on The Opera Platform

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is one of 15 major international opera houses participating in The Opera Platform, a European online streaming service the purpose of which is to provide free opera to viewers around Europe. The FNO’s The Flying Dutchman will be available in the service for one month from 13 January.

Kasper Holten’s production of The Flying Dutchman sets the action in the urban world of contemporary art. The title character is a famous artist who travels around the world. Holten notes that Wagner’s quest for everlasting love is particularly apparent in this work. “The notion of finding peace and everlasting love was one that Wagner was poignantly familiar with, as he himself spent his whole life travelling and never really found a place to settle down. His soul and his way of life made him enemies wherever he went; they also prompted him always to find a new woman and then to break up with her. Even fame brought him no comfort – his artistic talent was also a curse,” explains Holten.

The cast includes Camilla Nylund, Johan Reuter and Gregory Frank. The video designer is Luke Halls, whose video works have been seen at major European opera houses and also at the Paris Fashion Week and in concerts of pop megastars such as Adele, Rihanna and U2. The sets are by Philipp Fürhofer, the costumes by Anja Vang Kragh and the choreography by Signe Fabricius.

The Opera Platform is an online service jointly operated by European opera houses, streaming opera performances to viewers in Europe. The 15 major opera houses involved include the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Komische Oper in Berlin and the Norwegian National Opera. The service was established by Opera Europa, an association of European opera houses, with the European Culture Channel ARTE. The Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s previous contribution to The Opera Platform was Kullervo in spring 2015.

Streaming and video recordings form a key part of the online service of the FNOB, aiming at catering to broader audiences without limitations of place or time. All FNOB webcasts and streaming videos are available free of charge at Stage24, the online auditorium at oopperabaletti.fi.
