Carmina Burana by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet streamed live

Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana will be performed in concert by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet on Thursday 19 May. The concert is sold out, but Helsingin Sanomat will be streaming the performance live online.The live webcast from the FNOB will begin at 18.30. Before the performance, culture editor Vesa Sirén from Helsingin Sanomat will host a discussion about the work. Anne Sofie von Otter to star in Sebastian Fagerlund’s opera Autumn Sonata

The Finnish National Opera has commissioned a new opera from Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund, to be premiered in September 2017. The libretto for the new opera, Autumn Sonata, is by Gunilla Hemming, based on the eponymous film by Ingmar Bergman. Premiered in 1978, the film tells the story of an encounter between a celebrated pianist and her adult daughter whom she neglected in childhood. In the 2015–2016 season, the Finnish National Opera will present eight opera and ballet premieres with a strong contemporary theme, two of them world premieres of Finnish works. Finnish National Opera celebrates Jean Sibelius 150th anniversary

The FNO and the FNB will be contributing to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius with the world premiere of the expansive Kullervo by Tero Saarinen and with a fabulous concert themed around the work of author Roald Dahl, to which 4,000 schoolchildren in the 4th grade in Helsinki will be invited.
