Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of an Icon

This month marks the 50th anniversary of Fiskars’ most famous product: the Orange-handled Scissors. Since their introduction in 1967, Fiskars has sold over one billion pairs worldwide. These scissors were the first plastic-handled scissors to be made, and have been used for decades around the world.

To commemorate, Fiskars has launched a special 50th Anniversary exhibition at Finland’s Helsinki Design Museum and a dedicated 50th Anniversary webpage. Both showcase personal stories about the scissors from consumers and prominent designers as a way to celebrate the anniversary.

“Every pair of Orange-handled Scissors comes with its own story, whether it’s being told not to touch ‘mom’s scissors’ or passing them down for generations,” said President of Fiskars Americas, Paul Tonnesen. “What better way to honor the Orange-handled Scissors on this anniversary than to share these stories worldwide?”

Esteemed makers such as fashion designers Tracy Reese and Katie Ermilio, paper artist Eloise Corr Danch, illustrator Laura Ljungkvist, and creative Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge created artwork for the website and exhibit, which launched with a special VIP event on Sept. 7 and is open to the general public until Oct. 29, 2017.
