Summer Yard Care Tips and Tools

With the right tools and regular care, summer yard care projects can be manageable and rewarding, leaving more time to enjoy the season.

StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower – A combination of technologies makes the StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower easier to push than other reel mowers. It features a non-contact cutting system that uses precision-ground, hardened steel blades to cut grass without the blades touching. This reduces friction and blade wear, eliminating the need for annual sharpening. It also features an inset wheel design for closer edging, a cut height range of 1-4”, an 18”cut width and a unique grass discharge chute that throws clippings forward.

Mowing Tip:  In the spring and fall, it is okay to trim lawn to a shorter height because of cool nights and rainy days. However, in the summer, especially during the hottest months, grass should be left slightly longer (three inches is good for most varieties) to help insulate the grass from the summer sun and reduce water loss from the soil.

UpRoot® Weed and Root Remover – A long handle makes this weeder ideal for removing weeds without bending over or using chemicals. Four serrated, stainless-steel claws grab weeds and roots and an easy-eject mechanism clears the weed from the tool.

Weeding Tip: Pull weeds after a rain or a good soak from watering; the soil will be softer than when it is dry, and it may be easier to pull more of the roots to help prevent the weed from growing back.

Salsa Rain Barrel System with DiverterPro™ – This 58 gallon rain barrel made in the USA is designed to withstand the elements and has a flat back to fit snugly against a house. The spigot can be used to fill watering cans or connect to a hose. The patented DiverterPro™ filters debris from the rain gutter and channels water away from the foundation of the house when the rain barrel is full.

Watering Tip: Drought or not, it’s important to think about water conservation before water becomes scarce. Install the rain barrel in spring when rainfall is more frequent and use the collected rainfall to water plants in the morning. Water evaporates less during the natural dew cycle in the early morning, leaving plants hydrated before the day heats up.
