Extraordinary Days: Book about the life of Fiskars Village’s creative community

Throughout 2024, Fiskars will celebrate its 375th anniversary. Founded in 1649 as an ironworks, Fiskars is one of the oldest companies in the Western world. Its gardening, cooking, and crafting products are sold globally.

To celebrate the anniversary, Fiskars will publish a unique book about its birthplace Fiskars Village. The anniversary book offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the creative community in Fiskars Village. The book covers nine inspiring personal narratives and four stories by acclaimed creative writers, and it is full of beautiful images taken during the year’s four seasons.

“Fiskars’ purpose is to increase people’s happiness by making our daily routines more enjoyable, smoother, and more sustainable. In this anniversary book, we want to pay homage to the everyday, to daily life in Fiskars Village, its people and their homes. We also want to celebrate our roots, which are continuously strengthened by ordinary, yet special, everyday moments,” says Head of Public Affairs and Head of Fiskars Village at Fiskars Group, Jan D. Oker-Blom.

”I want to express our warmest thanks to all the residents of Fiskars Village who so generously took part in the making of this book, and the entire Fiskars Village community. We hope this book inspires us all to appreciate the uniqueness of everyday life, to be conscious of our choices, and to live a life that looks and feels like our own.”

Unique life in Fiskars Village

In the anniversary book, members of the creative community living and working in Fiskars Village tell in their own words about their lives while opening the doors to their homes. Members of the community include a carpenter, ceramic artist, food artisan, veterinarian and an entrepreneur couple.

”When I moved to Fiskars Village in 1994, there were hardly any people on the streets. We were pioneers! Ingmar Lindberg was the Deputy CEO of Fiskars Group then and he’d been instructed to ‘do something’ with the village. He told me how he woke up in the middle of the night and knew exactly what to do. Artisans and artists should be invited to live here in Fiskars Village”, says ceramicist Karin Widnäs, one of the people interviewed in the book.

The personal narratives in the book are complemented by four creative texts, which express the uniqueness of the village through short stories, essays, and poems.

The book is titled Extraordinary Days in Fiskars Village – 13 Stories. Its publishing house is Cozy Publishing. Author and journalist Hanna Jensen has been responsible for the book’s interviews and texts, and the photographs have been taken by photographer and graphic designer Viola Minerva Virtamo, who has also created the book’s visual identity.

The book will be published in Finnish and English, and it will be available in Fiskars’ webstore fiskars.fi, and selected Iittala Stores, Cozy Publishing’s online store, and selected retailers in Finland and globally (Suomalainen kirjakauppa, Akateeminen, Adlibris and Finnish Design Shop).
