The first Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale opens at Fiskars Village

The first Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale 2019 opens on May 19th, 2019 in the cultural and historical setting of industrial and natural beauty, Fiskars Village. This curated festival combines contemporary art and design to engage artists, designers, and the local communities.

Fiskars celebrates the opening of the biennale with a new communal art piece, designed by Petteri Masalin, Research & Development Vice President at Fiskars. The festival guests can leave their own mark on the art piece, which is made from materials the designer has collected from the rich forests surrounding Fiskars Village.

Design, art and factory form the three main exhibitions of the biennale

The design ensemble will be curated by designer Jasper Morrison, who has also designed the new Raami dining collection for Iittala. The collection will be complemented by a new limited-edition recycled glass tumbler, available in conjunction with the Biennale.

The contemporary art curator for the Biennale, Jenni Nurmenniemi, will highlight interspecies coexistence and the functionality of materials, instead of the human-centered perspective.

The third Biennale exhibition, the FACTORY collection produced by The Cooperative of Artisans, Designers and Artists in Fiskars, Onoma, will be curated by Anniina Koivu. This show will look into historical and contemporary production processes and present new perspectives for design making. Iittala takes part in the FACTORY exhibition with an installation named "The Colour of Things" by designer Thélonious Goupil. Fiskars’ new, wooden-shafted Norden axe is also part of the exhibition.

In addition, a Parallel Program of exhibitions and events by local artists and designers will complement the Biennale’s main exhibitions.

Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale will be open to the public from May 19th, 2019 until the September 15th, 2019. The tickets to the Biennale will be on sale from the area or from fiskarsvillagebiennale.com. Biennale is organized by Luovi Productions together with ONOMA, The Cooperative of Artisans, Designers and Artists in Fiskars.

Fiskars Village

Founded on the Fiskars river in 1649, Fiskars ironworks is considered the birthplace of Finnish industrialism. The historical buildings in the village and the surrounding biodiverse hardwood forests make the area a unique destination. Currently Fiskars Village is home to some 600 inhabitants, and it is a significant centre for handicrafts in Finland.
