The Vintage service expands to all Iittala stores in Finland and extends recycling to other manufacturers’ broken tableware

The Vintage service, which buys and re-sells used Iittala and Arabia tableware, is expanding to ten new stores in the end of July and all Iittala stores in Finland by the end of the year. The service will also begin to recycle broken or worn out glassware and ceramic tableware from other brands. Ceramics and glassware have commonly been disposed of with non-recyclable, general waste. Now the Vintage service will enable broken tableware to be recycled in more than 20 municipalities around Finland

The Vintage service, launched in three Iittala stores in spring, is expanding to ten new stores on Tuesday 30 July. The service will be expanded to all Iittala stores in Finland by the end of 2019.

Vintage buys and sells second-hand everyday tableware by Iittala and Arabia. The condition of each item is checked carefully, and any items that don’t meet resell criteria will be passed on for reuse and recycling.  "

"The Vintage service has been extremely popular. The selection of Vintage items in each store changes every day, and we’ve seen gems from decades past and recent years alike. Our customers find missing parts of their collections or complement their table setting with items like sugar bowls or sauce boats. Timeless, thoughtful design lasts for years, and can be passed from one generation to the next", says Lotta Eskolin, Service Manager for Vintage.  

From July onwards, the Vintage service will also enable customers to recycle broken or worn out glassware and ceramic tableware from other brands. The items brought in for recycling will be reused as raw materials for the construction industry. Ceramics are crushed into a fine powder to provide raw material for bricks, while waste glass will be used to manufacture insulation material. The Vintage service will not, however, buy or sell tableware from other manufacturers.

"Until now, ceramics and glassware have commonly been disposed of with non-recyclable, general waste. The Vintage service will enable broken tableware to be recycled in more than 20 municipalities around Finland. Sustainable development and the circular economy are very important to us, which is why we wanted to extend the recycling service to other manufacturers’ goods too. We should not waste a single item that could instead be reused as raw material", Eskolin points out.

Circular economy is part of Fiskars Group’s sustainability programme, and the aim is to find new business opportunities based on it. Circular economy means a new way of thinking in which consumption is based on sharing, renting, recycling, and using services, instead of owning products and manufacturing new ones.

The Vintage service will be launched on 30 July at Iittala Store Redi in Helsinki and Iittala Store Ratina in Tampere, as well as Outlets in Vaasa, Lommila, Turku, Lempäälä, Oulu, Kyyjärvi and Jyväskylä’s Seppä. By the end of 2019, the service will be offered by all Iittala stores and outlets in Finland.
