(September 9, 2013 Salt Lake City, UT), BLOXR Corporation, a developer of radiation protection products made from non-toxic, non-metal materials today announced the launch of their revolutionary X-ray attenuation cream, UltraBLOX.

Diagnostic imaging, in the form of X-rays, fluoroscopy and CT scans, has revolutionized diagnostic radiology.  Reports indicate the number of X-rays has exploded to 180 million and the number of CT scans to 60 million annually in the US alone, with ~ 4 million CT scans for children under age 15. The downside is the heightened concern of radiation overexposure to both patients and clinicians alike.

Clinicians who are exposed routinely, for extended hours on a daily basis throughout their long careers, may reach their annual dose limits in a few months of practice. This overexposure to harmful ionizing radiation is far greater than that of other medical staff and is known to pose risks including skin rashes and hair loss.

Clinicians wear protective aprons and thyroid collars to reduce dose exposure, but have limited options for protecting their hands. BLOXR’s novel topically applied radiation attenuation cream, UltraBLOX, provides effective dose reduction without adversely affecting dexterity or tactile feel.

"The UltraBLOX radioprotective cream provides radiation protection to a clinician's hands without changing the tactile feeling or limiting dexterity during surgery" said Dr. Alfonso Mejia, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Vice-Chair, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Illinois Medical Center and Director of their Residency program.  "This will allow us to use fluoroscopy while holding or manipulating within the operative field in order to maximize the outcome for the patient without compromising the safety of the surgeon," he added.

We were pleased that the pre-clinical study on the attenuating cream presented at the 2012 AAOS Annual Meeting was recognized as one of the top stories at that meeting," said Ashok Khandkar, President and Chief Executive Officer of BLOXR.  “Launching UltraBLOX is a further demonstration of BLOXR’s commitment to and leadership in the field of providing superior and cost effective radiation protection solutions to healthcare professionals," he said.
