Inside the head of an ABW nerd

How are the senses in a mind connected to the way an office is designed? And how can this be experienced on a regular working day? This morning our head of marketing decided to invite everybody to a tour inside his frontal loab.

"When unlocking the door to our office and stepping in, I always first notice the big colourful wall where anybody can scribble what flow means to them. This morning my eyes discover the frase: Flow is tail-wind. And motivation in headwind. Next to it somebodies kid wrote: When I play Minecraft with big red letters. I´m not a gamer but I suspect they are both dead right.

When taking my coat off, the loudspeaker in the cloakroom fills up the space with a soft tune I don´t recognize. Never the less, it is doing its job in welcoming me to work.

I grab a cup of coffee in the darkblue painted kitchen, pass our couch area - the heart of the office - and enter the dynamic zone calling out: “Good morning flowmakers”. Heads pop up over the screens. Nods and early morning mumbling greets me back.

And I stop. Put my briefcase down and just freeze. Inside I search for clues to what my system needs this morning. Is it silence and focus, creative collaboration or maybe fooling around? Although I would love to chat with Björn about his new born baby or crack jokes with Tommy, I realize that this morning I need to be in a concentrated state. Without outer interference.

So, I steer towards the silence zone with its denser, more introvert energy. When plugging in the computer at my chosen desk next to a window framing the hazy September sun, the two large screens in front of me instantly wake up.

I take a sip of coffee, enjoy the tranquillity of the zone and stretch my fingers. And start writing a piece on what this morning feels like inside the head of an ABW nerd."
