16 years as President and CEO of Munich Airport

Dr. Michael Kerkloh, the President and CEO of Munich Airport, will turn 65 on Thursday, July 5, 2018. Kerkloh, who hails from Ahlen in Germany's Westphalia region, has been at the helm of FMG, the Munich Airport operating company, since September 2002. He is regarded as one of the most experienced and respected experts on the airport scene, both in Germany and at the international level. Under his leadership, Bavaria's gateway to the world has developed into one of the busiest and most successful air transportation hubs in Europe, with a total of over 44 million passengers last year. Munich Airport also holds the distinction of being the first hub in Europe to earn the prestigious "Five-star airport" designation from the London-based Skytrax Institute.

In addition to serving as the president and CEO, Kerkloh is also the labor director of FMG. In June 2017 the Supervisory Board extended his contract for a further two years through to the end of 2019. After completing secondary school and military service, Kerkloh studied in Göttingen, London and Frankfurt. He earned a degree in economics in 1979 and worked as a lecturer in economic policy at the University of Frankfurt until 1985 while completing a doctorate in political science.

Kerkloh began his aviation career at Frankfurt Airport, where he was responsible for operational planning, organizational implementation and the coordination of aircraft handling. Later he was put in charge of the operational side of aircraft handling. In 1995 Dr. Michael Kerkloh was appointed to the management team of Hamburg Airport. Alongside Werner Hauschild, he spent seven years as one of two managing directors with joint responsibility for overall airport management.

He quickly gained a reputation in Hamburg and far beyond as a highly competent aviation expert whose innovative concepts and strategic foresight stand for modern, competitive airport management. Kerkloh, who is noted for his cooperative leadership style, sees team spirit and staff creativity as essential factors for business success.

Dr. Michael Kerkloh is a member of the governing bodies of a number of important industry organizations. He has served on the board of Airport Council International (ACI), the umbrella organization for European passenger airports for many years. Just two weeks ago, in Brussels, he was again elected president of that body. ACI Europe represents the interests of over 500 airports in 45 European countries.

In addition, Kerkloh spent approximately six years as the president of the German Airports Association (ADV). He is a member of the executive committee of the German Aviation Industry Association (BDL) as well as numerous other associations. On Monday evening he was also appointed to a further term of office as the president of the Export-Club Bayerns e.V., which promotes the interests of the Bavarian economy.
