Camden care home seeks help rolling back time

A care home in Camden is asking local people to help it roll back time as it prepares for a special reminiscence day on Thursday 21 May to mark national Dementia Awareness Week (18-24 May).

Ash Court Care Centre on Ascham Street is inviting members of the public to take in objects, photographs and memorabilia from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and enjoy a chat with residents about ‘the good old days’ over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

The idea behind Ash Court’s ‘Remember When’ event is to give the residents a chance to reminisce and socialise in a relaxed setting. “What people may not realise about dementia is that sufferers have a stronger long-term memory than short-term, so it’s important to surround them with things they would have known when they were younger and that they are comfortable with. It helps to reassure them and makes them feel involved and stimulated. Activities such as conversation and discussion, reminiscence and life history are also now well known to improve the well-being and quality of life of people with dementia,” comments manager for Ash Court Care Centre, Steven Anderson.

Remember When will run from 11am to 3pm and guests are welcome to take part in the afternoon activities which include a reminiscence themed quiz followed by a film chosen by the residents from a selection including Brief Encounter and Kind Hearts and Coronets.

Ash Court Care Centre is located in the heart of a residential area of Kentish Town and offers 24-hour residential nursing for people aged 55 and over, long-term, respite and post-operative care. Crisis intervention, non-planned and emergency admissions are a speciality. All rooms have ensuite facilities and can be individualised to suit each resident. Ash Court is part of the Forest Healthcare group of homes, which includes 13 individual homes throughout the South East of England.
