Residents at a Maidstone care centre are hoping that the enticing scents of freshly-baked croissants and fresh coffee will tempt people through the doors at The Poplars in Tonbridge Road on Friday, when the home opens to the public as part of the Care Home Open Days scheme.

From 10.30am on Friday 19 June, residents and staff will be throwing open the doors to give visitors a chance to see inside the homely care facility, with a promise of a continental breakfast, chat and games for those popping in during the morning.

In the afternoon, from 2.30pm, the Gallic fare makes way for Western flair, with live music performed by country singer, Barry Barton, and all staff will be swapping their usual attire for Western-wear, complete with Stetsons and checked shirts!

“The idea behind the National Care Home Open Days is that people get to see what goes on inside a care home and hopefully dispel some of the myths around living in care,” comments centre manager, Marion Harford. “Here at The Poplars, we’re known for our packed event programme and friendly welcome, so that is exactly what visitors will experience on Friday 19 June – and it almost goes without saying that there will be a pot of freshly brewed tea on the go all day for anyone wanting to drop in for a chat or a look around!”

Indeed, for staff and residents at The Poplars, every day is treated like an open day, as their ‘open door’ policy encourages anyone looking for residential care to pop in without an appointment. “For us, this isn’t about putting on a show just because we are inviting people in, we simply want to demonstrate what life is like for our residents – fun, stimulating and always something different going on!” adds Marion.

The Poplars Care Centre is located on Tonbridge Road in Maidstone, with 56 bedrooms offering a friendly, family environment for persons over 65 with a range of needs, from respite and post-operative care to crisis intervention and emergency admissions. The Poplars is part of the Forest Healthcare group of homes, which includes 13 individual homes throughout the South East of England.
