A Maidstone care centre is turning the clocks back to the heady days of Teddy Boys, rock and roll and ‘teenagers’ for a 1950s themed summer day on Thursday 20 August.

From 2pm, the baby boomers at The Poplars in Tonbridge Road will be having a blast celebrating the fabulous fifties as they bop along to live music and singers, sip tea and munch cakes. Visitors of all ages are welcome to come along and join the fun.

“Many of our residents lived through the 1950s and it was a time of real change. They were the first generation to be labelled ‘teenagers’, the first to eat fish fingers and the first to see televisions, which was all very innovative back then. Really, it’s incredible to think how much life has changed in the last 60 years but many of our residents have very fond memories of that era, which is why we chose it as the theme for our summer day,” comments centre manager, Marion Harford.

The 1950s day is typical of the kind of events held at The Poplars all year. “We like to make life as entertaining and interesting as we can for our residents – it’s important that they have fun, so there’s always something different going on!” adds Marion.

The Poplars Care Centre is located on Tonbridge Road in Maidstone, with 56 bedrooms offering a friendly, family environment for persons over 65 with a range of needs, from respite and post-operative care to crisis intervention and emergency admissions. The Poplars is part of the Forest Healthcare group of homes, which includes 13 individual homes throughout the South East of England.
