New activity room opens at Crowthorne care home

There will be no stopping residents at Pinehurst Care Centre now that the new activity room has opened giving them uninterrupted access to their favourite pastimes, from arts and crafts to brain-exercising jigsaws.

“Studies have shown that activities like puzzles are good for brain function and general wellbeing and once our residents get stuck into something they like to keep going. We’ve created this new room for them so they can leave what they’re working on while they have a break or go for lunch without having to clear it away – they can just dip in and out of things as they wish, which is how we like to do things at Pinehurst,” says Lynne Cotterell, centre manager.

The residents have been involved in deciding how the activity room should be kitted out and a sewing machine and a typewriter came top of the wish list. “It’s been lovely hearing them share their memories and talk about what they used to make with their sewing machines or what typewriters were like. These new resources have already been so well received and I know the activity room is going to be extremely popular. My only slight concern is that now the big 1000-piece jigsaws will be able to stay in place for as long as needed, people may be tempted to pinch a piece so they can keep the satisfaction of putting the last piece in place for themselves!” says Lynne.

Pinehurst Care Centre is located on Duke’s Ride in Crowthorne, Berkshire, with 47 bedrooms offering a friendly, family environment for persons over 65 with a range of needs including dementia, from respite and post-operative care to crisis intervention and emergency admissions. Pinehurst is part of the Forest Healthcare group of homes, which includes 13 individual homes throughout the South East of England.
