Relationship tips from real experts - a couple married 74 years!

“Do everything together, and never go to bed angry” – that’s the top advice for young couples this Valentine’s Day from a romantic duo who will celebrate their 74th wedding anniversary this year, Jack and Barbara Lawrence, from Warren Lodge Care Centre in Wokingham.

The couple, who met and got married just before the Second World War, have stuck together through thick and thin. Even when Barbara’s ill health required her to move into full time care, her husband accompanied her, and they now spend their days together at Warren Lodge Care Centre.

“We always feel that the secret to a long and happy marriage is to do everything you can together, as a couple,” comments Jack. “Even when you have disagreements, sort things out on the same day and don’t let it linger. We’ve always believed in being honest with each other, and accept that even when life becomes hard, you can get through it if you stick together.”

Jack and Barbara met at the ballast holes in Reading, by the River Thames. Jack was riding his bike, and spotted Barbara, but it wasn’t until he returned to the river one evening and saw Barbara alone that he bucked up the courage to speak to her. It was ‘love at first sight’ for Barbara, and they started meeting regularly, tying the knot just before the outbreak of World War II.

Jack is now 95, and Barbara 93, but the old romantics still enjoy each other’s company in the home, safe in the knowledge that there are people on hand to take care of them both.

“They are a lovely couple, and it is an absolute delight to have them here at Warren Lodge,” comments manager, Anthony Browne. “It is a real testament to their devotion that Jack joined Barbara when she moved here, but you can see how much love they share – they are not only husband and wife, but also the best of friends.”
