Rempod brings traditional 'pub' to Forest Care Village

It is not every day that you walk into a care centre and find a traditional English public house, but thanks to a special pop-up display unit, the familiar surroundings of a wooden bar are now available to residents at Forest Care Village in Borehamwood.

The pop-up pub is a ‘Rempod’, a mobile display unit which aims to replicate familiar spaces within care homes, especially designed for those living with dementia. The public house backdrop is one of two in use at Forest Care Village – the other depicts a retro living room, complete with a fully functioning 1950s-style television, radio and mantel clock.

“When you are working with people with dementia, the modern world can be a confusing place due to short term memory loss, and yet with their long-term memories still intact, creating environments from their earlier lives which remind them of good times and feel familiar is a great way of helping to reduce anxiety and agitation,” comments centre manager, Wendy Lawther. “We already have one reminiscence room in the home, but this enables residents to make use of other parts of the care centre by providing a ‘grounding’ backdrop that provides familiarity in a new space.”

Forest Care Village has a dedicated dementia unit, with specially trained staff providing round-the-clock support for those living with dementia, and a wide range of resources and facilities to ensure that residents have the best possible quality of life despite their condition.

The award-winning Rempods featured on the BBC TV series, Dragon’s Den, and received support from two of the dragons, Peter Jones and Deborah Meaden.

The dementia unit forms just one part of the care provision at Forest Care Village, with other specialist units in the 165 bedroom home caring for people young and old with neuro- and spinal injuries, neurological disorders and a range of disabilities that require residential nursing care 24 hours a day or simply occasional respite care. The centre includes a purpose-built physiotherapy suite, sensory areas and enclosed gardens for residents as well as a dedicated Lifestyles Team. Forest Care Village is one of twelve homes in the Forest Healthcare Group, spread across London and the South East. Rempods are also being installed at Cedars Care Centre in New Barnet, Hertfordshire and Warren Lodge Care Centre in Wokingham, Berkshire.
