Fortum's environmental key figures in 2007

• 89% of the electricity generated by Fortum was free of carbon dioxide emissions.
• Renewables accounted for 40% of Fortum's electricity generation and 34% of heat generation.
• Environmental certificates cover 96% of Fortum's business volume.
• Fortum Markets is the leading seller of eco-labelled electricity in the Nordic countries.

In 2007, 89% (84% in 2006) of the electricity generated by Fortum was free of carbon dioxide emissions. CO2 emissions from Fortum's own power plants totalled 10.4 (11.0) million tonnes, some 5% lower than the previous year. The specific CO2 emissions of the company's total electricity generation, including wholly and partly-owned power generation, was 64 g/kWh (107 g/kWh), which is among the lowest of the major European power companies. In the EU25 area, the average specific emission from power plants has been around 400 g/kWh during recent years.

Renewable energy sources accounted for 40% (40%) of Fortum's electricity generation and 34% (38%) of heat generation. The use of waste-derived fuels rose by 3% representing now 5% of Fortum's non-nuclear fuel use.

Today ISO 14001 environmental certificates cover approximately 96% (95%) of Fortum's business volume. In addition to ISO 14001, some business units have also certified their management systems in accordance with ISO 9001/9002 quality standard and OHSAS 18001 health and safety standard. In 2007, new certificates were granted to Fortum's business units in Finland, Sweden, Lithuania and Scotland.

Fortum Markets was the leading seller of eco-labelled electricity in the Nordic countries. Over 60% of Fortum Markets' customers, altogether 700,000 customers, buy eco-labelled electricity. In Finland, all our customers who have a Fortum Kesto electricity agreement receive eco-labelled “Norppa” electricity. In a similar way, all our Swedish customers with a Fortum Enkel agreement receive “Good environmental choice” labelled electricity. In addition a part of Fortum's heat generation carries also the “Norppa” eco-label.

Fortum received three significant recognitions for its sustainability performance in 2007. For the fifth year in a row, the company secured its place on the global Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Furthermore, Fortum was selected to the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) for the first time. The CDLI is comprised of 68 FT500 companies that show distinction in their reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and implementation of climate change strategies. For the first time, Fortum was also chosen for “The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations” list. Furthermore, Fortum is included on Storebrand’s Best in Class report.
