A good production year 2018 at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant

Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant had a good production year in 2018. The power plant generated a total of 7.79 terawatt hours (net) of carbon-free power equalling more than 11% of Finland’s total electricity production. As a result of the Loviisa nuclear power plant’s electricity production, Finland emits about 6 million tonnes less carbon dioxide emissions compared to the equivalent amount of fossil fuel-based electricity.
On an international scale, the 88.4% load factor of the Loviisa nuclear power plant was among the best in the world for pressurised water reactor power plants. In 2018, the demanding outages were reflected in the power plants load factors. Loviisa unit 1’s load factor was 90.9% and Loviisa unit 2’s 85.9%. Unit 1 underwent the short refuelling outage and unit 2 underwent the extensive annual outage. The maintenance outage of unit 1 lasted just over 26 days and the annual outage of unit 2 lasted nearly 47 days.
“In 2018, the safety and usability of the power plant was improved by, for example, automation system modernisations and safety improvements of the secondary circuit. In addition, one of the most notable improvements was the modernisation of the Polar crane in Loviisa unit 2, which is used for heavy lifting in the containment. The Polar crane of Loviisa unit 1 will be modernised during 2019,” says Loviisa Power Plant Deputy Director Thomas Buddas.
“Alongside the continuous improvement of power plant’s safety and reliability over the power plant’s history, also the rated output of the plant units has been increased. The modernisation programme implemented during 2014-2018 increased the output by a total of 22 MW," Buddas continues.
The Loviisa nuclear power plant is a major employer in the region, providing work for approximately 500 Fortum employees and nearly 100 permanent employees of other companies working in the plant area every day. Additionally, more than one thousand external employees participated in the annual outages and projects in 2018. The power plant also employed more than 70 summer trainees. Fortum’s investments in the Loviisa power plant in 2018 were approximately EUR 100 million (2017: approximately EUR 90 million).
