Annual outage at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant begins
The annual outage at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant starts on Sunday 21 August. Loviisa unit 1 will undergo the outage first, followed by unit 2 right thereafter. The work on unit 2 is estimated to be completed by the end of September.
In addition to normal maintenance and refuelling, the most significant maintenance works on Loviisa 1 include modifications of sumps in the steam generator room, replacements of 6 kilovolt (kV) switchgear circuit breakers as well as opening of the steam generator primary collectors and change of seals.
On Loviisa 2, besides refuelling and normal maintenance tasks, one reserve diesel will be replaced with a renovated one and 6 kV switchgear circuit breakers will be replaced.
Altogether some 750 maintenance and inspection specialists from 76 companies will join the power plant's 500 own employees in the annual outage.
Annual maintenance guarantees safe and undisturbed functioning of the power plant. In 2011, the Loviisa power plant produced 7.7 terawatt-hours of electricity, corresponding to the annual consumption of 385,000 electrically-heated detached houses. The capacity factor describing the plant's availability was about 91 percent last year. The figure is one of the best among nuclear plants in the world, despite the fact that Loviisa unit 2 underwent the longest possible annual outage type.
