Fortum is one of the frontrunners in developing renewables in Russia. In January 2018, the company commissioned the first commercial-scale wind farm in the country – Ulyanovsk Wind Farm 1. Its installed capacity is 35 MW.
Today Fortum and Rusnano are implementing an extensive investment program in Russia. In 2017 and 2018, Wind Energy Development Fund established by the two companies on a parity basis obtained the right to build almost 1,823 MW of wind generation. Wind farms are expected to be commissioned during 2019–2023. The first project completed by the Wind Energy Development Fund is Ulyanovsk Wind Farm 2 that started delivering power to the wholesale electricity and capacity market (WECM) in January 2019. Power generation capacity of Ulyanovsk Wind Farm 2 is 50 MW.
In 2018, Fortum was also awarded the right to build 115.6 MW of solar generation following the results of a competitive selection of RES investment projects. The solar power plants are expected to be commissioned in 2021–2022.
