Fortum receives international recognition for sustainability work
Fortum has been selected for the eighth consecutive year in the Dow Jones
Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). Additionally, Fortum earned a place on
the DJSI Europe index. Fortum received the highest score in its specific
industry for customer relationship management and for the energy efficiency and
reliability of electricity generation and distribution. The company's efforts to
promote safety also were recognised.
"This year's assessment emphasised the early identification of occupational
safety risks and the company's proactive efforts to advance safety and
occupational well-being. Fortum's goal is to offer its personnel a workplace
where no accidents happen. I am very pleased that Fortum improved its
performance, particularly in the area of social responsibility", says Fortum's
Ulla Rehell, Vice President, Sustainability.
"The good availability of Fortum's power plants, its energy production
structure, energy efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution are key
factors in customer satisfaction, financial performance and environmental
protection. Our excellent performance in these sub-areas is significant
recognition of the determined, long-term work we have done", she continues.
Fortum is the only Nordic energy company on the indexes
The 2010 assessment included about 1,400 companies from 57 different sectors.
From the electricity sector, 13 of the 105 companies assessed were included on
the Dow Jones World Index, and 7 of the 20 companies assessed earned a spot on
the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index. Fortum is the only Nordic energy
company on both indexes.
The assessment was conducted by the independent Swiss SAM Group, and it covered
all areas of sustainability: economic, social and environmental responsibility.
New criteria in the 2010 assessment was related to water risk management
including water consumption, quality and regulation.
