Fortum's climate reporting and performance ranked at the top in the Nordic
countries 

Fortum is included in the Nordic Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index comprising
twenty companies that have the most professional approach to management of
climate affairs. Extensive and transparent greenhouse gas reporting, a thorough
understanding of climate risks and opportunities, and successful integration of
climate issues into business strategies were among the factors that convinced
the analysts of Fortum's efforts regarding climate change mitigation. 

Fortum was listed among the companies with the highest scores in the CDP Nordic
200 Report that was published today in Helsinki. Carbon Disclosure Project
(CDP) analysed the carbon disclosure and performance of the 200 biggest
Nordic-listed companies. Fortum received 82 out of 100 points regarding
disclosure and received a score of B in carbon performance (ranked on an A-D
scale). The index, compiled by Jönköpings International Business School (Jibs)
on behalf of CDP, provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors. CDP
represents 534 institutional investors with $64 trillion in assets under
management.

mid-1990s. Our core operations are based on our strong competence in carbon
dioxide-free nuclear, hydro and resource-efficient CHP production. Fortum's
view is that future energy systems should be based on high energy efficiency
and technologies enabling carbon dioxide-free energy production. We want to
build a low-carbon society in collaboration with other sectors in society”,
says Anne Brunila, Executive Vice President, Corporate Relations and
Sustainability, Fortum. 

Fortum has purposefully developed its climate disclosure e.g. by extending its
greenhouse gas reporting to cover both direct emissions from energy production
and indirect emissions from the supply chain. In addition to carbon dioxide
(CO2), Fortum's greenhouse gas reporting also includes methane (CH4) and
nitrogen oxide (N2O). A year ago Fortum published the climate report "Fortum
and Climate Change 2009" and the recently released report "Next Generation
Energy" describes the company's new approach to sustainability. 

"Currently Fortum is revising its CO2 targets to include specific CO2 emissions
from total energy production in all operating countries. The company has also
decided to set a target for energy efficiency because, in addition to CO2
emissions, the efficient use of resources is extremely important for us",
Brunila continues.
