Fortum to implement largest nitrogen oxides-reduction project at Polish power
plants

Fortum has signed a contract with the Polish Południowy Koncern Energetyczny
(PKE), part of Tauron Group, to reduce nitrogen oxides at Polish power plants.
The EUR 55 million contract is the largest of its kind in terms of value in
Poland. The project is being implemented in co-operation with Zakłady Remontowe
Energetyki Katowice (ZRE Katowice).

The contract includes the adaptation of six boilers at Południowy Koncern
Energetyczny's (PKE) Jaworzno III power plant. The aim is to reduce the
emissions of nitrogen oxides by approximately 60 % and to improve the energy
efficiency of the plants to comply with EU requirements.

“PKE's commitment to reducing emissions and improving the energy efficiency of
its plants is exemplary. This contract is very important for Fortum, and it can
also be seen as the cornerstone of many years of our co-operation. The burners
to be installed with the entire combustion system are new-generation devices
and will enable the power plant to meet the more restrictive requirements
concerning the emissions of nitrogen oxides,” says Heikki Andersson, Vice
President of the Power Solutions at the Fortum Group.

In the project, Fortum is responsible for the technological solutions and the
deliveries of basic equipment, while ZRE Katowice is taking care of the
domestic deliveries and the entire assembly. The implementation of the contract
will begin this year and will be completed in February 2016.

“Climate mitigation sets huge requirements for energy companies. However, there
is no need to convince anybody that such investments are money well spent. As
an energy company, we play a key role in reducing environmental impacts and our
efforts affect generations to come,” says Jan Kurp, President of PKE.
