Weekly Blog Documents First-of-Its-Kind Transformation

Last month, the "World’s Most Famous Office Building" and the world’s lighting leader announced that they were partnering to transition the building’s iconic tower lights to innovative LEDs. The two organizations are pushing the boundaries of LED technology to develop a state-of-the-art dynamic lighting system from Philips Color Kinetics that is unique to Empire State Building (ESB) and will allow the building's façade and mast to change lighting scenes in real-time. In addition to greater control and management of the lighting, the new system will deliver superior light levels, as well as allow the ESB to better highlight its architectural details.

Over the course of the coming weeks, the building’s nearly 400 light fixtures will be replaced with over 1,200 state-of-the-art LED fixtures that have been uniquely designed for the building. This entire transition will occur while keeping the building lit every night. Overseeing this project is Mike Lay of Philips Color Kinetics, and throughout the entire process, Mike will provide weekly updates via his blog about the ESB transformation process. Complementing his updates will be ongoing video and photography of the building as the changes occur.
