Neal R. Hegarty Joins Foundation Center Board of Trustees
New York, NY — August 19, 2014. Foundation Center, the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide, has elected Neal R. Hegarty to its board of trustees. His service will commence with the board's next meeting in November.
Hegarty is vice president of programs at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in Flint, Michigan, a private philanthropy that makes grants focused in four areas: Civil Society, Environment, Flint Area, and Pathways Out of Poverty. Hegarty brings experience as a leader of one of the oldest U.S. foundations and extensive knowledge of programs that strengthen the responsiveness and capacity of the nonprofit sector.

"With the way technology and the global economy are changing philanthropy around the world, this is an exciting time to have the opportunity to help Foundation Center further develop its role as a leader in shaping our field.”
Hegarty has held several positions of increasing responsibility at the Mott Foundation. He joined the foundation in 2000 as an associate program officer on the Flint Area team. In 2003, he was promoted to program officer managing grant portfolios for both the Flint Area and Pathways Out of Poverty programs. In 2008, he was named program director of the Flint Area grantmaking team. He has held the position of vice president of programs since January 2012. Before joining the Mott Foundation, Hegarty was assistant director of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition in Lansing, Michigan.
The 57-year-old Foundation Center strengthens the social sector by advancing knowledge about philanthropy. Through data, analysis, and training, it supports the work of those striving to make the world a better place. Among the strategic priorities outlined in its Foundation Center 2020 plan are connecting nonprofits to the resources they need to succeed and empowering donors with knowledge tools they need to be more strategic.

Hegarty holds a B.A. in political science from Texas Tech University and a master's in public policy and administration from Michigan State University.
