FRAME welcomes minister's call for end to UK animal experiments
More collaboration needed between Government, industry and alternatives researchers to find valid, effective, non-animal methods.
FRAME has welcomed Home Office minister Norman Baker’s call for an end to animal experiments in the UK.
In an interview with the BBC Mr Baker said an end cannot happen overnight but he believes the Government is moving in the right direction.
FRAME wants to see more collaboration between the Government, industry and alternatives researchers to find effective non-animal methods to replace those currently in use.
Recent studies have shown that testing drugs on animals is not a reliable way to identify potential risks to humans. Much more needs to be done to find effective, reliable and scientifically valid non-animal methods that will bring about an end to animal testing.
FRAME was established in 1969 to promote the concept of alternatives to laboratory animal use in medical research and toxicity testing. The charity is dedicated to developing and validating alternative methods, and working actively with all interested parties to achieve greater human safety.
Director of the FRAME Alternatives Laboratory Dr Andrew Bennett said: “If we are to find useful, safe drugs in the future it is vital that all stakeholders work together to find valid, non-animal methods that will identify them.
"Toxicity data from animal studies can be seriously misleading but it is no good just saying that animal tests don't work - we have to find methods that can identify potential risks and benefits, and everyone should work together to achieve that."

FRAME is the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments.
It promotes the replacement of laboratory animals with non-animal methods, through better science.
Its ultimate aim is the elimination of the need to use laboratory animals in any kind of scientific or medical procedures.
