Dublin, Ireland. – With the recent news that employment in Ireland is increasing, former Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in Ireland, Frank Kelly, offered his thoughts on the effects this would have on businesses from a HR perspective.

“There is a great deal to be positive about if you’re Irish right now,” explained Mr Kelly, “The unemployment rate in Ireland has fallen by 4.4% since 2012 and this trend is predicted by many to continue well into the New Year.”

Whilst the figures would suggest that the economic situation in Ireland is looking increasingly positive, the one-time Director for Human Resources at Dublin City Council observed that there was still room for improvement and challenges ahead.

“This positive news will be greatly received by HR departments across Ireland, but as the demand for workers increases, the HR sector will face new obstacles.

“With a greater workforce comes a growing need to ensure that workers are sufficiently motivated in such a way to increase productivity in the workplace.

“Staffing and employment issues, along with training and development should always be on the minds of business leaders. This becomes even more of a priority given the rise in employment.

“There is also an ever-increasing need to minimise costs and reduce risk, often with a limited amount of resources. This is as true of small businesses as it is of more sizable organisations with large HR departments or governmental bodies.”

Mr Kelly has worked with a range of HR experts throughout his career and now works as a Business and HR Coach.

Last month, he chaired the 16th Annual Local Government Human Resources Conference in Limerick where he spoke at length on the future for the sector.

Mr Kelly continued: “Whilst the signs are that the economy is improving the situation is still difficult for many Irish businesses. In this climate there is a need to facilitate a change in culture that HR Managers should be instigating.

“All workers want to be respected and appreciated. Creating the environment to enable this shift comes from authentic leadership and looking for practical solutions instead of finger-pointing.”
