Fraport Traffic Figures - February 2004: Another Record Month at Frankfurt Airport: Strongest February Ever for Passenger Traffic - Cargo Reaches New Peak Frankfurt/Main, Germany - - Group's Other Airports Report Noticeable - Increase in Cargo and Passenger Traffic Overall Passenger figures at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) once again registered a strong increase in February 2004. After the January 2004 record month - the strongest January for passenger and cargo traffic in the airport's history - FRA achieved an increase of nine percent compared to the same month last year. With approximately 3.6 million passengers in February 2004, this represents another monthly record. Even without the extra day (February 29) in the 2004 leap year, the distinct upward growth trend of about five percent in recent months would have continued and would also have resulted in a record performance for the month. Intercontinental traffic, in particular, recorded above average growth. Destinations in the Far and Middle East as well as North America showed double-digit growth. Holiday destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Sri Lanka were also in strong demand. In the first two months of 2004, some 7.2 million passengers traveled via FRA, 5.5 percent more than in the same period last year. Frankfurt also recorded considerable gains in the cargo sector. The airport handled 137,505 metric tons of airfreight, a 12.2 percent increase. This is the highest cargo volume of any February in the airport's history. Adjusted for February 29, cargo tonnage would still have increased strongly by more than seven percent - also a monthly record. Intercontinental traffic continued to drive growth: airfreight volumes to and from the Middle East, central and southern Africa, the Far East and Latin America experienced particularly strong growth. FRA's airfreight tonnage for the January-to-February two-month period rose by 8.1 percent to 252,322 metric tons. Airmail volumes continued to decline in February 2004, mainly due to a continuing reduction in services for Deutsche Post's domestic overnight airmail network: a decline of 6.9 percent, or 10,116 metric tons, compared to February 2003. In February, Frankfurt Airport registered 35,999 takeoffs and landings, 2.4 percent more than in the same month last year. Maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 3.8 percent to more than two million metric tons. Overall, the airports of the Fraport Group registered about 4.8 million passengers, 12.1 percent more than in February 2003. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), with about 187,600 passengers, registered an increase of 33.2 percent. Antalya Airport (AYT) exceeded the previous year's figures by 34.7 percent, with approximately 313,300 international passengers. Hanover Airport (HAJ) increased by 8.6 percent to about 299,600 passengers and Lima Airport (LIM) by 21.6 percent to about 394,600 passengers. Cargo throughput for the Fraport Group amounted to over 169,700 metric tons, 12 percent more than in the same month last year.
