Today on World Kidney Day, Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services announces plans to offer Online Haemodiafiltration (Online HDF) across its UK clinics. The programme has already begun to be introduced, and will be completed by 2012.

On the day when Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services begins its countdown to its 20th anniversary on Thursday 1 April, the world’s leading provider of dialysis products and services has committed to rolling out Online HDF, a treatment modality using ultrapure dialysate produced by the machine as a substitution fluid. This allows the exchange of large amounts of fluid during treatment, thereby achieving a dialysis which more closely resembles the natural kidney function. Investment in technology is crucial and in 2009, Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services completed a £1million installation of a new clinical management system called EuCliD5. It provides a single specialist Renal IT system throughout all of the clinics in the UK and Ireland and stores all the treatment and clinical data of the dialysis patients. In addition, EuCliD5 enables full treatment information for the clinician’s patients to be available at the main NHS Trust or even integrated into the NHS renal system. This bi-directional data transfer facility enables data to be sent between the NHS and clinic for a seamless service. Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services has been operating dialysis services in partnership with the NHS since 1990, and now runs 53 clinics in the UK and Ireland, which provide regular dialysis treatment for over 3500 NHS patients. In the UK, 30,000 people are either receiving dialysis or have undergone transplantation and the number of patients is increasing by 6% per annum. Through the Nephrocare® programme, Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services is delivering the highest standard of patient care through fully-equipped, fully-managed dialysis clinics. 2010 is Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services’ ‘Year of the Patient’ so a number of new initiatives will launch to continue the commitment to patient care. A new Patient Board of patient representatives from across the UK will meet bi-annually to give feedback and views on the issues, which really matter to the patients. Christine Houghton, Managing Director, says, “It is with great pride that I look back on the achievements of this business in the last 20 years and I look forward to the years ahead as we roll out technology, which will improve patient care and choice. I myself joined Fresenius on 1 April 1990 and back then we were treating just eight patients for the NHS. Now we regularly carry out over half a million treatments for the NHS every year.” Since the successful launch of our 50th clinic last year in Woodgate, Birmingham, we have opened three more clinics in Macclesfield, North Wandsworth and Sutton and have further clinic openings planned throughout the year including Dearne Valley and Warrington.” -ends- • Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services UK is an official sponsor of World Kidney Day 2010 • Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services UK is the leading provider of dialysis services to the NHS, operating 53 partnership dialysis units that together provide regular dialysis treatment for 3500 NHS patients. • Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services UK invests in innovative partnership programmes to ensure high standards of care for dialysis patients. • Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services UK is a member of the Fresenius group of Companies, along with Fresenius Medical Care UK (a provider of dialysis products to the NHS).
