Mandator improving Europe's car industry

The objective of the European car industry is to be able to deliver a customer-adapted car within five days. Today it takes several weeks, sometimes months because the amount of vehicle configuration possibilities is almost infinite. The competitive and environmental advantages along with quick deliveries appeal to the European car industry as well as the EU commission and they have now agreed upon a research initiative. Mandator is the only IT consultancy participating from Sweden.

The EU commission, together with leading car manufacturers, suppliers, research institutes and universities have started a project which will support the delivery of a car within five days. I.e. from the customer's personal vehicle configuration and placement of order to the day the car is delivered and ready to be picked up, will not take more than five days. Today it takes several weeks, sometimes months. A reduced delivery time is considered to be of great significance measured in financial and environmental terms. The project will last for four years and will cost around SEK 110 million.

"Mandator has been included because we have documented experience of the car industry," says Helen Fredin, in charge of Mandator's operations in Gothenburg. We supply for instance, product planning, sales configuration and order systems. Product planning includes the analysis of previous manufacturing, the calculation of the potential of each new model, market analyses etc. and it is this type of know-how which is important for the EU project.

According to the car manufacturer's own organisation OICA, world car production has increased by 27% since 1995, or 14 million cars per year. In 2004, the hub of production shifted from the traditional car manufacturing countries to those countries where growth and demand are increasing. European car manufacturers are being challenged on different fronts, but can for instance meet this competition from other regions through more customer-adapted cars and more environmentally friendly production.
