RUSKIE – Beers, Bears and Babushkas

By Matthew Francis

The mysteries of Russia remain just that to most of us – a mystery, but British businessman Matthew Francis decided to find out for himself just what life was like behind the old Iron Curtain, survived to tell the story, and what a story it is!

His gripping book, Ruskie- Beers, Bears and Babushkas, draws back the mysterious curtain which kept the West from seeing the real truth behind it for years. He tells of the fun, the fear and the frolics involved in his adventure of setting up a western style consulting practice in Moscow.

The Russian way of doing business was not quite what he expected. Do the Russians drink copious amounts of vodka? Not necessarily, but he met those who did! Would you believe a Russian woman could profess her dying love for you by offering to chop off her fingers and put them in the post? Matthew didn’t, but he met one who did! He didn’t expect to meet Russian businessmen who were so determined to success that they shot their competitors, but he met some who did!

In an often hilarious, fast-paced account of the perils and pleasures which littered his path to business success, Matthew strips away the legendary veneer of the Russian people and finds that the truth is stranger than the legends. There’s a brush with the Moscow Mafia, sexier scenes than Maria Sharapova playing tennis in her underwear and the discovery of real Russian life which you have never read about before!

Matthew takes his readers on a journey of discovery as he begins to work and learn about the unseen dangers and pitfalls of being a Brit in Russia. He does things very much his way and discovers some extremely quirky characters who fit seamlessly into the modern Moscow which has emerged from the shadows of the Iron Curtain.

You’ll meet Hot Anna from Ufa, a village girl with a penchant for pole dancing, who is desperate to leave the country. There’s The Minx from Minsk a Belarussian call girl who generously offers a “Happy Hour” pricing system! And you must meet Top Titty Toilet Tatiana, a cat-loving legal assistant who loves fun and games as well. You will recognise and love Alexsey, a Russian billionaire who is planning to sell off his boss’s company, flee to England, and probably buy a football club.

This is a true story, quite frankly you couldn’t make it up! Everything revolves around Matthew’s quest to succeed as a British businessman in Moscow. Along the way he enjoys love, wealth and success, but what becomes of him in this still dangerous country? Read it and discover how the experience shaped his life and how he still helps the Russian community in the UK.

Born in 1975 in Leicester, Matthew Francis trained as a lawyer and practiced in America, returned home and then realised his Russian dream. He now lives in Warwickshire and uses his vast experience, aided with some fabulous anecdotes, to offer public relations expertise to Russian companies coming to the UK, and home-based companies looking to emulate his Russian adventures.
