Ready for a foodie adventure? It could be a bite into a crunchy Lange Rote sausage at the Münstermarkt in Freiburg, a hearty Baden dish in a brewery bar or an extravagant menu in a fine dining restaurant. And, depending on what and where you are eating, you can wash it down with a glass of fine Baden wine or a cool draught beer from one of the local breweries. Freiburg is a city for foodies and connoisseurs: the varied hospitality scene offers all the regional and international food you could possibly want. Thanks to its mild temperatures and excellent soils, the Breisgau region produces the perfect fine wines to pair with your meal.

Regional treats at the Münstermarkt

It is all go around Freiburg Minster from Monday to Saturday, with some 130 stall-holders plying their wares. On the north side, farmers from the Dreisam valley, the Markgräflerland and the Kaiserstuhl showcase the fruits of their harvests, while the south side is full of traders offering delicatessen treats, exotic fruits, crafts and plants.

A piece of Stefan’s cheesecake is a must for cake lovers, who will not be surprised to learn it has become a firm favourite way beyond the city limits of Freiburg and across the whole of Germany. The delicious Lange Rote or Münsterplatz sausage also comes highly recommended. In the hit list of local Freiburg attractions, it is on a par with the minster or the little streams known as Bächle running all through the city centre.

The Freiburg Menu – regional and seasonal

A number of Freiburg hospitality outlets have got together and come up with the interesting idea of the Freiburg Menu. Each menu is designed to focus on regional and seasonal produce. At least 70 per cent of the ingredients must be locally sourced. The drinks served, including water, juices, beer, wine and spirits, must also be produced no more than 130 kilometres away. The seasonal specialities on the Freiburg Menu change every quarter.

Enjoying wine in pubs, restaurants and wine bars

With its pretty vineyards at the edge of the city, Freiburg has the greatest wine-growing area of any city in Germany. The five classics of Baden wines are Gutedel, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc, Gris and Noir. They can be the perfect pairing to a Baden delicacy or simply a glass to enjoy with friends. The people of Freiburg love their wine and enjoy it in a number of ways. One of the most popular places to meet for a glass of wine is the ‘Alte Wache Freiburg’ on the minster square, which boasts over 200 regional wines to sample.

Numerous festivals, themed guided tours and Freiburg’s wine tours are all wonderful opportunities to gain a generous and interesting insight into the world of Baden wines. The winemakers of Freiburg are also happy to arrange individual visits and tastings. In addition, they open the doors to their Straussis (seasonal wine bars) twice a year. Local producers invite guests to their farms to enjoy simple Baden cooking and home-made wine, fruit brandy and cider in small, rustic spaces, barns, or even outside.

Enjoy the beer gardens into the autumn

The warm, sunny climate means the city’s lovely beer gardens can be enjoyed well into the autumn. The people of Freiburg like to enjoy a fresh draught beer in the Ganter Hausbiergarten after work. The speciality beers have been brewed in the traditional Ganter family brewery opposite since 1865. The Kastaniengarten at the Greiffenegg Schlössle restaurant is the oldest beer garden in southern Baden and affords wonderful views over the old town and as far as the Rhine plain.

Gourmet guided tours

A gourmet tour is a wonderful way to find out just what Freiburg has to offer for foodies. There are plenty of treats to enjoy, whether it is a tasting tour of the farmers’ market or a Baden tapas tour. At the same time, guests can experience the winding streets of the historic old town and find out more about the long history of the city of Freiburg.

The ‘Flying Dinner’ tour is a real highlight. This eventful dinner takes around two and a half hours, with three courses in different Freiburg hostelries, making for an entertaining foodie adventure built around Baden specialities and wines.

With some 230,000 inhabitants, Freiburg offers really relaxed city life and a natural balance for ambitious people. The city has all the variety you could ever want: outdoor activities, a rich cultural heritage and lots of popular pubs and restaurants. Freiburg is all about freedom and individuality, whether on the Schlossberg, at the weekly market or on a stroll around the city.
