With sun-drenched natural settings, a charming cityscape and all sorts of tasty treats, Freiburg has everything you need for a perfect city break. The Lonely Planet travel guide agrees, putting the Black Forest capital in the south of Germany in the number three spot for best cities in 2022.

The excellent quality of life and the green outlook of Freiburg’s 230,000-odd residents also played a role in achieving this ranking. The city has built itself a global reputation in areas such as solar technology, transport policy and environmental and climate protection.

Discover, explore, enjoy

It is very much a green city: quiet oases of green and lovely attractions are all close by and easy to reach. From the historic old town with lots of wonderful shopping, you can walk past the famous Freiburg Minster and through the bustling market full of regional specialities. The nearby Schlossberg mountain has lots of viewpoints affording panoramic views over the city and the Rhine valley. It is perfect for relaxing, exploring and spending time in the great outdoors, with lots of fantastic places to eat and drink.

If you start off by visiting the highlights, at some point you will notice what it is that gives the city its real charm, the little inner courtyards, narrow winding streets and famous ‘Bächle’. These little channels running through the whole of the city are magnets for tired feet.

A trip to Freiburg can easily be combined with activities in the surrounding area. There is something to suit all tastes around Freiburg, including gentle walks, indulgent tours of the wine-making villages and challenging mountain bike trails. The possibilities are endless, from a walk along the Dreisam to taking the cable car up the Schauinsland mountain. The city has its own ‘Frelo’ bike hire system which is really convenient and relaxing for visitors to use.

Infectious quality of life

The Lonely Planet jury were also impressed by the quality of life of the people of Freiburg. The university city offers a range of varied experiences and attractive events. Summer events like the three-week Zelt-Musik-Festival and the Freiburg Wine Festival are great fun. Freiburg is also a very musical city. It regularly plays host to a wide variety of concerts. From classical music in the stately concert hall and jazz in the historic city walls to rock concerts in the pubs, there is music in virtually every corner of Freiburg.

There is also plenty for art lovers. The Freiburg museums cover everything from prehistory to modern art. The Augustiner Museum combines the historical and the modern, while the Colombischlössle archaeological museum takes visitors on a trip through past millennia.

You can make your own plans for the day, but getting together in the evening for some hearty Baden cuisine is a must. A new addition is the ‘Freiburger Menu’, which indicate that a menu is made up of at least 70 per cent regional ingredients. You can round off the experience with delicious regional wines. No other German city boasts as much space dedicated to vineyards within the city limits. So it is hardly surprising that wine plays an important role in Freiburg life.

The listed Alte Wache building, known as the ‘House of Baden Wines’, is perfect for wine lovers. Tastings are available in the wine shop and wine bar. Our insider tip is Kalte Sofie, a full-bodied indulgence of a wine served with crushed ice.

With some 230,000 inhabitants, Freiburg offers really relaxed city life and a natural balance for ambitious people. The city has all the variety you could ever want: outdoor activities, a rich cultural heritage and lots of popular pubs and restaurants. Freiburg is all about freedom and individuality, whether on the Schlossberg, at the weekly market or on a stroll around the city.
