Gatespace Empowers Network Based Services for Train Maintenance and Diagnostics Gatespace's OSGi based Distributed Service Platform in use at Adtranz's Swedish Metro Pilot (C20) Gothenburg, Sweden - Feb 27, 2001 - Gatespace, a provider of open standards based distributed service platforms for designing, developing, and delivering network-based services, announced today that Adtranz Rail e- services is running Gatespace's OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative) based Distributed Service Platform in its' Swedish Metro (C20) pilot. Gatespace's Distributed Service Platform and its unique value added components have made it possible for Adtranz to take a giant step forward in reaching its' ambitious goals to substantially improve availability of train service, decrease life-cycle costs and offer a variety of new and innovative services to train passengers. The Swedish underground pilot includes two train sets, which have been running since October 2000, and which is set up within the framework of Adtranz's research project "Da Vinci". The pilot focuses on implementing and testing a remote diagnostic and maintenance process by connecting the on-board train event and maintenance database with an off-board maintenance and logistics system. The trains are equipped with service gateway boxes, which are empowered by Gatespace's software platform. The platform makes it possible to, from a remote location, look into the train, access diagnostic data and upload information whenever is needed. By not requiring physical presence by service personnel on the train, the system provides for big savings in both time and money and increases the service availability. This pilot in particular is running under very difficult tunnel conditions with potential failure of the GSM access network connection. Therefore a key requirement has been that the system meets the highest security standards. This has also been possible thanks to Gatespace's value adding secure messaging function. Gatespace's product was included in Adtranz's solution already when it was first demonstrated at the InnoTrans in Berlin in September, 2000. "By using the OSGi platform as base of our services, we achieve the flexibility to adopt to our customers legacy systems and in addition to interface to the different communication busses used in train applications, like TCN. This openness and flexibility is required by our customers," says Linus Thrybom, Projectleader at Adtranz. "Gatespace's objective by participating in Adtranz's Stockholm pilot is to demonstrate the value of implementing an industrial application using the open OSGi standard. This shows how our products add value not only for consumer oriented residential and automotive applications, but also in very demanding industrial environments," says Staffan Truvé, CEO of Gatespace. With its Secure Messaging extension service, Gatespace provides the highest level of security available. The secure messaging function works as a sort of post office that takes each message, puts it into an envelope and distributes it to the receiver via the most optimum transmission method. The transmission method can change due to changes in the environment but the message and its' address stays the same. Messages can also be signed and ciphered which provides for the highest confidentiality of data. About Gatespace Gatespace provides open standards based distributed service platforms for designing, developing, and delivering network based services. Gatespace products are designed to be compliant with OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative), and support full interoperability between service providers, network operators, and service gateway manufacturers. This provides for secure and reliable end-to-end services for consumers on the residential markets, among others. Gatespace was founded jointly by Ericsson and the Swedish research company CR&T, and is privately funded by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Fuqua Venture Partners, European Equity Partners, Pythagoras Participations, T-bolaget and Bure Equity.
