Innovative Safety Concept Offers Improved Road Safety For 27 Million Cyclists

With the UK experiencing consistently aggressive growth in the number of cyclists taking to the country's roads, the rate of injured or killed cyclists has also seen an increase. As a result, an enterprising company has developed an innovative cyclist safety device, known as the 'Indic8or'.

In the United Kingdom alone, RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) reported that approximately 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured on British roads each year. During 2013 a record number of 19,438 reported road accidents resulted in serious injury or death to cyclists.

In addition to the sobering statistic, RoSPA also recognised that in 57% of these collisions, the motor vehicle driver was found to be at fault of 'failing to look properly'. Of the serious injuries and deaths resulting from cyclist-vehicle collisions, 75% of these occurred in urban areas such as city centres. The study also recognised that commuter cyclists are most at risk, with the most dangerous times occurring between 8-9am and 3-4pm.

The 'Indic8or' safety device has been designed to drastically reduce the risk to cyclist-commuters by providing a high visibility and driver-familiar indication device closely resembling directional indicators on motor vehicles.

Brainchild of a London taxi cab driver, the 'Indic8or' is set to revolutionise road safety for over 700,000 commuters cyclists daily. The ultra-bright LED wrist mounted device works by automatically detecting when the arm is raised to indicate an intention to turn. It stops flashing as soon as the arm returns to the handlebars.

London taxi cab driver and creator, Ken Tedder explained how he devised the concept "Driving the streets of London for a living opens your eyes to the daily risks people take getting to and from work, both car and van drivers as well as cyclists. Cyclists weaving about the traffic scare the life out of me, often not only a hazard to themselves but also to other road users and pedestrians.

Ken continued “Poor driving is generally the cause of most accidents involving cyclists, although we often have no idea where they have come from, or where they're going! It came to a head when I almost took a female cyclist off of her bike as she cut across my lane a poorly lit street. As it happens, she did have her arm out - I just didn't see it! Then it occurred to me that it's all very well having a flashing light on their seat but that doesn't tell drivers their next move. I went home, thought about it and sketched a device to be worn on the wrist so that they can physically indicate!”

About the 'Indic8or'

The 'Indic8or' patented design enables four ultra-bright amber LED’s to flash automatically, similar to a car indicator, once the wearers arm is raised. This ensures everyone is aware of the cyclists intended manoeuvre and increases the rider's safety considerably. Whether commuter, social or more serious road riders, the 'Indic8or' makes sure that hand signals can be clearly seen by other vehicles.
