London Therapeutic Centre, Renaissance Life Therapies, has launched an initiative called “Hugs 2 Happiness” to demonstrate the positive effects of being hugged.

London, UK (December 22, 2014) - The London based practice, Renaissance Life Therapies, is giving away hugs by way of a friendly, brown bear mascot, bearing the company's logo. The mascot is worn by an employee who can be seen around the city, either hugging people, or holding a sign, with the words, "I Give Good Hugs”.

The Harley Street team of counsellors, have taken to the streets in a bid to combat the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, as it is more commonly known.

At this time of year with fewer daylight hours, the practice sees a sharp rise in the number of people seeking counselling for symptoms such as; feelings of depression, low energy and loss of sex drive, all of which are associated with the Winter blues.

When asked about the inspiration behind the initiative, managing director of the centre, Libby Seery said: “We’ve launched the campaign, ‘Hug 2 Happiness’, to bring about the awareness of the positive benefits of being hugged.  Just two seconds of being hugged, boosts our body’s level of serotonin, the chemical responsible for lifting our mood, and helping us to feel happier.”

A study by a Harvard M.D. indicated that receiving 8 hugs per day stimulates the production of oxytocin which contributes to one's overall sense of happiness and well being.  In addition, famed family therapist, Virginia Satir, said humans need 4 hugs daily for survival, 8 for maintenance and 12 for growth.

Having already given out hundreds of hugs in London, the brown bear mascot has visited several other locations, spreading Winter cheer and giving hugs to those in need.
