Following the Mayor of London’s announcement yesterday (9 December) that some of the £370m received from the sale of New Scotland Yard will be invested in mobile technology for new officers, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged computer hardware has warned that the windfall must not be wasted on the wrong devices.

Peter Molyneux, President, Getac UK says: "There are 31,000 officers in the Metropolitan Police. If they are equipped with a device that is not built to survive in the field, potentially the investment will be wasted. In this critical working environment high failure rates will severely impact the productivity of the individual and their capability to police. Choosing a device that can survive the field and a supplier who can provide the service and support model for such a high volume estate clearly is a major consideration for this project.”

Getac’s range of devices includes the fully rugged T800 8” Windows tablet, which is MIL-STD-810G rated with an 8-band 4G LTE antenna and the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Both the T800 and the Z710 7” Android fully rugged tablet, also MIL-STD-810G rated are configured for use with a secure device management platform in partnership with Viasat and Becrypt.
