GL Assessment responds to the Primary Assessment and Accountability Consultation
27 March 2014 - GL Assessment, the UK’s largest independent provider of educational assessments, welcomes the DfE’s response to the Primary Assessment and Accountability consultation, particularly its principles for assessment and its drive to catch low attainment at the earliest possible age.
However, GL Assessment calls for the DfE to confirm what the new baseline assessment will cover as quickly as possible.
Greg Watson, Chief Executive of GL Assessment, said: “We need the DfE to confirm the criteria urgently. These assessments must not be seen as children’s first school exam. We should be assessing children’s overall readiness to learn and using that information to give every child the best possible start. That’s what great reception teachers have always done.”
GL Assessment also calls for good teacher training to be provided in formative, summative and diagnostic assessment during teacher training, as well as throughout their teaching career. The focus on moderation cited in the consultation is not enough.
