Research on Geography of Innovation Rewarded with 100 000 Euros
The 2013 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research is awarded to Professor Maryann Feldman, Heninger Distinguished Professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina and Senior Fellow of the Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise. Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research is the leading international award in entrepreneurship research with a prize sum of EUR 100 000. Professor Feldman is awarded for her comprehensive contribution in numerous areas of this field.
Professor Maryann Feldman is well-known for her contributions to the field of geography of innovation. A central focus of her work is on the role of entrepreneurial activity in the formation of regional industry clusters.
- “Prof. Feldman’s work spans over a wide spectrum of entrepreneurship research and she has made significant contributions to our understanding of areas of innovation, commercialization of academic research and factors promoting technological change and economic growth”, says Prof Bo Carlsson, Case Western Reserve University and Chairman of the Award committee.
In her research, Feldman has studied a variety of industries such as the pharmaceutical and biotech sector, researching academic entrepreneurship, university-industry relations, intellectual property rights and technology entrepreneurship.
- “Her work has also had a significant impact on policy. She has testified before the United States Congress on issues related to innovation and entrepreneurship and consulted with local governments and entrepreneurial organizations on strategy”, Carlsson continues.
The official motivation for the 2013 Award further emphasises Feldman’s high quality contributions, encompassing an impressive output of conceptually comprehensive, empirically thorough, and technically sophisticated papers in highly ranked journals. In addition, Professor Feldmann is also currently consulting with the US Department of Commerce.

The Global Award for Entreprenurship Research was established as the foremost global award for research on entrepreneurship. The Award honours significant contributions to theory-building on entrepreneurship and small business development. The Award consists of the statuette”The Hand of God” by the Swedish sculptor Carl Milles and a prize sum of 100 000 euros. The Award was instituted in 1996 and re-launched under a new name in 2008.
