GlobalConnect initiates major digital infrastructure project – future-proofing the Nordics as an arena for global tech investments

During the coming 12 months, digital infrastructure and network provider GlobalConnect will start deploying a mega capacity fiber cable from the very north of Sweden all the way to Berlin. The cable will secure high-speed connectivity and capacity to new and existing customers in the region, but will also future-proof the Nordics as an attractive area for global tech industry investments. The project will primarily cater to GlobalConnect’s wholesale business, GlobalConnect Carrier, targeting tech giants’ high-capacity needs, carriers as well as system integrators.

“This is the largest digital infrastructure project we’ve seen in the Nordics in recent years. Robust and future-proof infrastructure for high-capacity data is crucial to global technology companies looking at the Nordics as a potential area of establishment,” says Regina Donato Dahlström, CEO, GlobalConnect Carrier.

In recent years, the Nordic region has become the home to some of the largest technology companies in the world as a place for them to establish data centers, as the region offers natural cooling being in the northern hemisphere, great access to green electricity, plenty of space and a fundamentally solid infrastructure.

The backbone fiber cable used in this project can handle three million times more data than standard cables commonly used to connect private households. This type of mega capacity fiber cable is essential in order to transport large amounts of data in and out from the Nordics to Europe and the rest of the world. The project was just initiated and GlobalConnect’s bold ambition is to finalize it within 12 months.

“Building this high-capacity freeway is an important step on our journey, becoming the leading digital infrastructure provider in Northern Europe. We want to offer a natural gateway to the Nordics, which is becoming increasingly important as the need for connectivity keeps increasing by the minute in all parts of society,” says Martin Lippert, CEO GlobalConnect Group.
